VRR Deep Dive: Will VR find an unlikely audience among Retrogamers?

Welcome to another installment of Deep Dives. On this Deep Dive, Anthony explores the relationship between Virtual Reality and Retrogames. These two unlikely bedfellows could become kissing cousins in the very near future. More and more VR games are coming out with stylized retro graphics. We also have VR games that will take us back to arcade gaming from yesteryear. Plus, some publishers and developers are mining the past for games that can be retrofitted for a VR experience. Imagine exploring your favorite childhood games, from inside the game you know like the back of your hand.

VRR Deep Dive: Is VR being hindered by the baggage of gaming?

Video games has 40-years worth of history behind it. It has allowed a gradual progression of expectation in terms of what a video game should be. VRR Deep Dive: Why is VR perceived as a gimmick?

Some people might consider VR as nothing more than a fad - a gimmick - and often compare it to technology that has been hailed as 'the next big thing', only to fail a few years later. It's a perfectly understandable opinion to have - we've been burned so many times in the past. The Wii, 3DTVs and the Kinect could all fall into the category of 'gimmicky tech'. VRR Deep Dive: Artificial Controls & Complete VR Experiences

In this Deep Dive, Steve explores the criticisms of VR titles lacking motion controls. Even with motion controls most titles still have artificial elements, so a well made game without motion controls isn't truly any less of a legitimate VR experience based on that element alone especially if it doesn't have any of the secondary problems that motion controls themselves exhibit.

The first generation of consumer-ready VR headsets were released almost a year ago and it's safe to say the technology has yet to fully break into the mainstream. Enthusiasts and early adopters are the primary market at this stage, but what will it take for VR to truly break into mainstream consciousness? 

In this short episode, I talk about some of my own opinions on this subject, and explore what kind of innovations I think need to be made in order to capture mainstream attention.

VRR Deep Dive: Thinking of getting VR? Know this.... VR will be a SLOW burn...

This time, Anthony talks about how widespread VR adoption is not going to happen overnight. VR Gamers are going to need a ton of patience to weather the early storm of VR's growing pains. 

If you want to jump on the VR bandwagon, go ahead, but know what you're getting yourself into. Triple A games in all our favorite genres is going to take some time. We have to be accepting of these early VR games, and maybe we need to be more open minded about trying new genres and supporting these early VR efforts. Our patience will eventually be rewarded.

Has Virtual Reality ruined monitor gaming? In this video I talk about the impact VR has had on my more traditional gaming habits over the past year. The simple answer to the question above is 'No, VR hasn't ruined monitor gaming.' In this Deep Dive, Anthony takes a closer look at the tracking and controller situation with PlayStation VR. There are many complaints about poor tracking and lackluster motion controllers. Should Sony offer a brand new tracking solution mid cycle? Should we simply wait for PS5 and PSVR 2? Anthony explores these issues in more depth.
